After a week off, Monday night brought another new episode of The Noise. The guys opened the show discussing the weekend that was, in which G received a tech for telling a ref to “blow his whistle.” The ref responded as he gave the tech with “You told me to blow the whistle.”

After a quick break the guys welcomed Michael Lee (@MrMichaelLee) from The Washington Post to discuss the NBA Playoffs and the off-season plans for the Washington Wizards. Michael Lee thinks there is not much to make of the media induced beef between Frank Vogel and Lebron James. Lee also thinks that the greatness of Lebron James has superseded the talk of him joining both Chris Bosh and Dwayne Wade.

The guys then jumped into more NBA talk, specifically whether or not the Heat being so dominant is good for the NBA. Stu feels like that it is not a good thing for the Heat to have no challengers, though he admits some of that has to do with how he feels about Lebron James. G feels like that the greatness of Lebron is a good thing; it makes for great theatre to see if somebody can beat them.

After a break the guys were joined by Tarik El-Bashir (@TarikCSN) to discuss the Redskins and the start of the first round of OTA’s. Tarik had a great article on csnwashington.com about the crowded backfield filled with running backs. One guy that Tarik has an eye on is Roy Helu Jr, who has been battling injuries the past two seasons. Tarik also got into a little bit of the talk surrounding Robert Griffin III and his constant need to respond to criticism on social media.

The guys then went in to their own debate about Griffin responding too much to criticism. The latest whirlwind surrounding Griffin has to do with fans sending him gifts from Bed, Bath & Beyond, where he and his fiancé are registered. Griffin took to Twitter to defend a picture he tweeted, thanking the fans for all the gifts he received. Stu, Matty, and G all agreed that Griffin is spending too much time defending himself on Twitter.

After another quick break the guys welcomed Chase Hughes (@chasehughescsn) of csnwashington.com to discuss the Nats. The Nats are struggling right now and some of that Chase points to health. The Nats are missing a few parts offensively and that is showing in the amount of runs they are not scoring as of late. Chase said that Jayson Werth might be out a little while longer, and they will have to see how the serious the injury to Ross Detweiler.

In the final segment of the show, Stu, Matt, and G debated whether or not DC sports are becoming the new Philly sports in terms of not getting it done in the postseason. The guys all agreed that the Caps are the only team you can definitively say that about, because they have been on this run for at least six years. The other franchises are just scratching the surface of their potential.

The Washington Capitals will host the New York Rangers in Game 7 of their Eastern Conference quarterfinal matchup tonight at Verizon Center. The Capitals are 10-1 vs. the Rangers at Verizon Center in the playoffs dating back to Game 5 of the 2009 Eastern Conference quarterfinal. Washington’s lone loss came last season in a triple overtime loss in Game 3 of the quarterfinal series. The Capitals and Rangers are the first NHL teams to play Game 7 in back-to-back years since Colorado and Los Angeles did so in 2001-02. These two teams are the fifth pair of NHL franchises in history to meet in Game 7 in consecutive years (courtesy of Elias Sports Bureau).

Seven of the Caps last nine playoff series since 2008 have required seven games, three of which have come against the Rangers. Washington is 1-1 against New York in that span, winning 2-1 at home in the 2009 quarterfinals. Besides Mathieu Perreault, Tom Wilson, Steve Oleksy and Jack Hillen, every Capital in last night’s lineup has played in a Game 7. Braden Holtby has compiled a 1-1 record with a 1.48 goals-against average and a .952 save percentage in two career Game 7’s. Alex Ovechkin has tallied 2g-2a in six career Game 7’s.

The Washington Capitals return home for Game 5 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinal series vs. the New York Rangers tonight at Verizon Center.

Mike Green extended his playoff point streak to four games with an assist in Game 4. His nine career playoff goals tie him for fifth place in Caps history for goals by a defenseman, joining Scott Stevens and Larry Murphy. Five of his career playoff goals and 11 of his 24 career assists have come in his 23 postseason games against the Rangers. The four-game playoff point streak is tied for the second-longest of Green’s playoff career. He tallied a five-game streak (1g-4a) against the New York Rangers in the five-game 2011 Eastern Conference quarterfinals.

Alex Ovechkin was nominated as a finalist for the 2012-13 Ted Lindsay Award, along with Martin St. Louis and Sidney Crosby. The Ted Lindsay Award is presented annually to the “Most Outstanding Player” in the NHL, as voted by fellow members of the NHLPA. Ovechkin is vying for his fourth “Most Outstanding Player” award. He previously received the players’ award in three consecutive seasons (2007-08, 2008-09, 2009-10), and he was also a finalist in 2005-06.

Mathieu Perreault scored a goal and added an assist in Game 4, his first career playoff goal. Perreault has a two-game point streak and is tied for the postseason team lead in points (4). Jason Chimera assisted on Perreault’s goal giving him 10 points (6g-4a) in 16 career playoff games vs. New York. He has tallied 2g-3a in his last six postseason games vs. the Rangers.

Joel Ward tallied two assists in Game 4 and has now posted three helpers in his last two games. He ranks tied for first on the team in assists and tied for third in points. Ward has scored 0.15 goals per game and 0.39 points per game in his career during the regular season. During his postseason career Ward has compiled 0.28 goals per game and 0.69 points per contest.

John Carlson skated 24:46 and blocked a team-high five shots in Game 4 vs. the Rangers. Carlson ranks second on Washington in average ice time per game (23:37) and leads all Capitals in shorthanded ice time per game (4:38). His 17 blocked shots lead the Capitals and rank tied for third in the NHL.

—by Jeremy “The Commish” Gordon @commish21

When the final furious seconds ticked off last night a familiar feeling settled into the team and the entire Caps fan base. That familiar feeling is failure in the playoffs, which past teams and this particular core group has felt far too often. I’m not going to sugarcoat anything because no matter what positives happened in the last two games they don’t mean a thing. Game 5 is now a turning point in the Adam Oates led era of this organization. The Capitals simply can’t lose game five or they will head back to New York on Mother’s Day after losing three in a row, home ice advantage and any confidence at all that they worked so hard to build and achieve. They are simply back at square one with the series even, but after losing two games in a row there are some glaring holes that need to be filled.

The power play, which was number one in the league during the regular season has been stagnant and has only produced two goals. The 1-3-1 system was a machine during the year, but when you play the same team four times in eight days they will grow accustom how to play it. Every Ranger knows they try to get the puck to Ovi on the left hash for one-timers through Backstrom and Ribs. Option two is to suck in the defense, let Green take slap shots from the point and try to get deflections or rebounds. Option three is to hold the puck low and feed the middle to Brouwer for quick shots. The Rangers have shaded Ovi giving him no space to shoot and aren’t falling for shot fakes from the point like they did in the first two games.

Oates needs to make adjustment and move Ovi around so they can’t pinpoint him every time in the zone. Brouwer needs to park his rump right in front of the Queen (Sarcasm). Lundquist hates traffic like every other goalie in the league so why not sit in front of him and annoy the crap out of him. It’s a tough dirty job but somebody has to sacrifice the body and do it. The playoffs are all about giving up the body for scoring goals and blocking them so somebody better send the memo out.

Now to the Captain and leader of this team; two points in four games? Ovechkin’s effort last night was absolutely deplorable and he is being crushed by every Hockey analyst that doesn’t cover the Caps. He looked lost out there in the two games at Madison Square Garden. Skating around not knowing how to elude the defense without being poke checked. I haven’t seen him at all be physical and use his tremendous size, strength and speed like he did in the first two games or for the last two months for that matter. Go to the damn net and make them play you other ways because you are a linebacker on skates. I’m not worried about the Rangers because if we clean up our act and do what we do best, then we win the series.

Braden Holtby has to be better than he was in-game four. The misplay of the puck in the first period was the difference on the scoreboard. These coaches have more than enough confidence in him but if he gets sloppy again I would pull him. You are a goalie so play the position and not try to be a defenseman. People love his stickhandling but I have seen him make some very questionable decisions with the puck and you can’t have that in the playoffs.

I am giving major Kudos to the third line for keeping us in that last game and especially to Joel Ward and Mathieu Perrault. That’s the kinds of effort everybody needs to put out and take the next step, which this team and its fans so badly deserve. NO MORE DAYS OFF FROM PRACTICE!!!!!! That was a grave mistake made by Adam Oates, which he has already corrected by having them on the ice this morning at 11:30.

Marty Erat is almost certain not to play in tomorrow’s game (upper-body injury), so will we see Tom Wilson the imposing 6-4 210 pound freight train on skates that can make some of these Rangers tremble play? Whoever suits up in the Red better bring it all tomorrow because they can’t lose three in a row and expect to win this series.

Follow me on Twitter@Commish21 to hear me talk major garbage about what the hell is going on in Sports.

The Washington Capitals will face the New York Rangers in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals tonight at Madison Square Garden. Washington has gone 18-16 all-time in Game 4’s, 10-6 when leading the series 2-1. The Capitals have gone 4-1 in their last five Game 4’s, 2-1 on the road. Washington has gone 5-2 against the Rangers in Game 4’s. The Capitals have won nine playoff games on the road against the Rangers, the most road wins against any team in Washington playoff history, and have gone 6-3-1 in their last 10 regular-season games at Madison Square Garden.

Braden Holtby has gone 7-0 in games following a loss in his postseason career. Holtby has recorded a 1.21 goals-against average and a .962 save percentage in playoff games following a loss.

Mike Green scored a goal in Game 3 and has goals in back-to-back postseason games. The goal, his ninth career playoff tally, moved him into a tie for fifth place in Caps history for goals by a defenseman, joining Scott Stevens and Larry Murphy. With his assist on Green’s overtime goal in Game 2, Alex Ovechkin has passed Mike Ridley and now ranks second in Capitals playoff scoring history with 61 career postseason points. Ovechkin (61 points in 54 games) trails Dale Hunter (72 points in 100 games) for the franchise record for playoff scoring.

Jason Chimera added an assist in Game 3 and has now recorded 6g-3a in 15 career playoff games vs. the Rangers, including 2g-2a in his last five games. Nicklas Backstrom scored his second career playoff goal vs. New York and has collected 2g-12a in 22 career postseasons games vs. the Rangers.

It was another new episode of The Noise with the fiercesome three, Stu, Matt, and G last night. The guys touched on their weekend events which included a whole lot of nothing. The guys recapped the weekend in sports before welcoming their first guest of the evening, Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) who talked all things NFL. Rapoport talked about the news out of Miami as free agent tackle Ryan Clabo signed with the Dolphins. Rapoport also talked about the few rookie minicamps that transpired over the weekend.

After a quick break the guys welcomed Patrick Reddington (@federalbaseball) to talk about the recent winning ways of the Washington Nationals. Reddington credited the return of Ryan Zimmerman to the lineup as one of the reasons the Nats have been playing well lately.

The guys returned from break and dived right into the NHL playoffs as the Caps were off to a 2-0 lead in their series with the Rangers. The guys recapped the first two games of the series, and wondered if the Caps would finally sweep a series for the first time in their history. As the guys found out later, that would not be the case.

The guys switched gears to two events that Stu hated over the weekend: The Kentucky Derby and the Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight. Stu was emphatic about how much he hates the lead up to the Derby as well as the anti-climactic fight involving Mayweather. G disagreed with Stu, but what else is new.

The last guest of the evening was the great Kevin Jones (@Mr_KevinJones) who offered his opinion on a variety of topics including how awful he thinks boxing is now. He also talked about how the Nats are going to have to play better as the season continues.

In the final segment of the night, Stu got another chance to rant about his other least favorite topic: Lebron James. Nothing Lebron does will ever be good enough in Stu’s eyes and he loves to hate on one Lebron James.

The Washington Redskins, in partnership with Bon Secours Virginia Health System, the City of Richmond and the Virginia Governor’s Office, announced their 2013 training camp schedule, set to take place at the new world-class Bon Secours Washington Redskins Training Center from July 25 through Aug. 16 in Richmond, Va. The schedule features a total of 17 days of practice sessions that will be open to the public highlighted by Fan Appreciation Day on Saturday, Aug. 3.

Admission is free for all fans. Two practice sessions are tentatively scheduled for each day of training camp. Practice times range between one-to-two hours. Following practice, Redskins players and coaches will be made available to sign autographs and take pictures with fans, schedules permitting.

“Fan interaction is a priority for our team and our new facility is built specifically with our fans in mind. We hope this historic move will set the standard of excellence for training camp experiences in all of professional sports,” Washington Redskins Executive Vice President/General Manager Bruce Allen said. “We are proud that Redskins training camp represents the single largest team sports event to take place within the Commonwealth of Virginia and we are excited to bring this unforgettable fan experience to Richmond.”

The new $10 million dollar state-of-the-art training center will feature two full-size natural grass fields, a natural grass drill field, spectator areas, locker rooms and a high-tech training room. The Bon Secours Virginia Health System will also ensure the facility serves as a valuable year-round resource for the community when camp is not in session. They will operate the facility as a full service sports medicine rehabilitation and men’s health center on the property throughout the year, in addition to offering men’s health, fitness and education programs. The facility will also be home to movin’ mania, Bon Secours’ healthy kids initiative.

The City of Richmond is developing field utilization plans to ensure the facility will also be available for a variety of sporting events and other activities throughout the year. The fields will be available for youth programming, tournaments and other uses that generate revenue and positive exposure for the City of Richmond when camp is not in session.

“We are honored to be the Official Training Camp Hospital Partner of the Washington Redskins and take great pride in this project; it will have such a significant impact on our city, both economically and from a health perspective,” said Peter Bernard, CEO of Bon Secours Virginia Health System. “In addition to promoting overall health and wellbeing, this new facility and partnership will allow us to further our long-established Healthy Communities initiative, which focuses on bringing health-care services and educational programs to Richmond’s underserved areas.”

Among the other noteworthy components of Bon Secours Washington Redskins Training Center will be a new City park with a multi-tier outdoor amphitheater and walking trails to enhance the benefits for residents, as well as camp attendees.

The City of Richmond will offer a variety of parking options for Redskins fans during training camp. With the exception of City Stadium, which will cost $7 and includes a shuttle, all parking facilities provided by the City will be $5. All fees are flat rates for the day (with no in-out service). Available parking lots provided by the City of Richmond will be announced closer to camp.

“As the official training camp home of the Washington Redskins, we are looking forward to an exciting training camp season at our new state-of-the-art facility,” said Richmond Mayor Dwight C. Jones. “Our optimal location – within a day’s drive of over half the United States’ population – makes Richmond the destination of choice that will be hard to resist for Redskins fans and for NFL fans looking for a training camp experience nearby.”

In addition to the opportunity to watch practice, the Redskins will offer special events, giveaways and other unique fan experience destinations. Fans can also enjoy various interactive tents and purchase their favorite Redskins merchandise at the Redskins Team Store tent. Located behind the Science Museum of Virginia and the Children’s Museum of Richmond, fans can also take advantage of special museum exhibits that will be featured during camp.

Prior to their arrival at training camp, Redskins fans are encouraged to fill out their free Training Camp Fan Invitation, which will be available onwww.redskins.com/trainingcamp.

“Last year, fans around the state were thrilled with the announcement that not only would the Redskins expand their headquarters and training facility in Ashburn, Va., but that for the first time they will be holding summer training camp in our capital city. The new Bon Secours Washington Redskins Training Center will be great for the community and will make for a world-class training camp facility starting this July,” Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell said. “The Redskins’ commitment to the community has been seen already in Richmond through the successful Play 60 Challenge and other service-oriented events led by players and staff. Data shows the team also supports 1,832 jobs in the Commonwealth, directly and indirectly, generating nearly $200 million in annual economic activity.”

Prior to the Redskins’ move to Richmond, the team hosted training camp at Redskins Park for 11 summers (2000, 2003-12). The move to Redskins Park in 2000 marked the first time the franchise opened the complex to visitors in team history. In the 11 years that the Redskins have trained at Redskins Park, the preseason camp has attracted an average of more than 100,000 fans per summer and has annually had Fan Appreciation Day attendance surpass 25,000-plus fans.

“We welcome football fans visiting Richmond to experience the only urban setting with Class IV rapids, the offerings at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, our award-winning Central Virginia craft breweries, shopping and festivals and more than 900 restaurants,” Gov. McDonnell said. “Richmond and the Redskins are a great match, and we welcome everyone this summer for what will be a great training camp and a great time in Virginia’s capital city.”

The Capitals have won nine playoff games on the road against the Rangers, the most road wins against any team in Washington playoff history, and have gone 6-3-1 in their last 10 regular-season games at Madison Square Garden. Braden Holtby has compiled a 2.13 goals-against average and a .932 save percentage in seven career games at Madison Square Garden (including playoffs) while Alex Ovechkin has posted eight points (4g-4a) in nine career postseason road games against the Rangers. Game 2 marked Washington’s first postseason shutout since a 2-0 win over the Rangers on 4/15/11. It also marked Washington’s second 1-0 playoff win, the first since 4/12/01 vs. Pittsburgh. The Capitals have shut out the Rangers five times in the postseason and have 13 shutouts in their playoff history.

Alex Ovechkin scored his 31st career playoff goal in Game 1, setting a Capitals franchise record for playoff goals previously held by Peter Bondra. Bondra tallied 30 goals in 73 playoff games while Ovechkin has recorded 31 goals in just 53 games. With his assist on Green’s overtime goal, Alex Ovechkin has passed Mike Ridley and now ranks second in Capitals playoff scoring history with 61 career postseason points. Ovechkin (61 points in 53 games) trails Dale Hunter (72 points in 100 games) for the franchise record for playoff scoring.

Mike Green’s power-play, game-winning goal in overtime gave the Capitals a 1-0 win over the Rangers and a 2-0 lead in their series in Game 2. It was the sixth time in NHL playoff history that a defenseman scored the goal in a 1-0 overtime victory. The most recent of those goals was scored by Andrei Zyuzin of San Jose in 1998 (courtesy of Elias). The goal was Green’s first career playoff overtime tally and his second game-winner (both against the Rangers).

Braden Holtby stopped all 24 shots he faced for his first career playoff shutout in Game 2. Holtby is now 3-0 in Game 2’s in his career, 2-0 vs. New York. He has allowed two goals or less in six of eight career playoff games vs. the Rangers (4-4, 1.80 GAA, .935 save percentage in those eight games).

On his impression of rookie minicamp:

“Good. I thought we got a lot done. We had five practices. I thought we got a lot out of it. We got a chance to evaluate a lot of players. Our draft choices and our free agents that were signed got a chance to be more familiar with our terminology. Overall I was really pleased.”

On if he saw what he was expecting from those players:

“Yeah. It’s an introduction to our system, both offensively and defensively. We don’t work on special teams in this camp, but we will in our OTAs. But they get a feel for what we’re trying to do. We get a chance to take a look at them, what type of athletes they are, what type of quickness and speed. And that was very impressive to see our draft choices out there and to see their size and their quickness and their speed and things we were hoping for. Their ball skills were very evident out there over the last few days. So it was a good practice.”

On if he saw a big jump in some of the players, particularly defensive backs like cornerback David Amerson:

“I think what someone does is they get used to what you’re doing, what kind of system you’re having. We do a lot of different things with our secondary and we put a lot of pressure on them mentally as well as physically. He gets a chance to see some of the things that we’re trying to do and I think by the fifth practice, he feels a lot more comfortable with our system and himself with what he’s trying to do. It was good.”

On Phillip Thomas and Bacarri Rambo playing both safety positions:

“You have to. Any time you have the motions and the shifts and the tight ends with the type of talent they have nowadays, you’ve got to be able to play both positions. And the good part about them, they’ve got the size and the athletic ability to play both positions. I think everybody knows what type of receiving skills they have and their ability to make plays, but I’ve seen enough on them on film I think both of them could do a great job at the strong safety position as well as the free safety position. That’s what you’re looking for when you draft them and hopefully that plays out that way.”

On if he can gauge their work ethic this early:

“When we drafted them, we have different tests that they take that tell us what type of mental quickness they have, what type of dedication, commitment, those type of things that are very important to us. Those two guys, one had a 10 and one had a nine out of a 10-point [scale]. That’s as good as you see and that’s what you’re hoping for. Now it’s open competition. It really doesn’t matter where you’re drafted, if you’re a first rounder or a free agent. It starts over again. We get a chance to see what they can do on a day-to-day basis and who wins the position. So it’ll be fun.”

On how close the personnel in the secondary is to being where he wants it:

“Well, like we were saying from day one, you’re constantly trying to get better. You’re trying to add depth where people can compete, and that’s what I think we’ve been able to do. We got three quality guys in the secondary that we were hoping to get. A lot of times you go in there with the idea that you get two or three guys and sometimes it doesn’t work out that way because your guys are taken. But I feel very good because the guys we were after were there. Now they get a chance to show us what they can do.”

On where he felt the team needed to improve in the secondary:

“When we started out, we had [Brandon] Meriweather and Tanard Jackson as our starters and both guys were out. So anytime you have those two guys at the end of your OTA days, you’re thinking that they’re going to be the starters on your football team. You lose two guys and actually have guys step up. I thought Reed [Doughty] did an excellent job last year, especially at the strong safety position when he was in the box. He played as good as you could ask a guy to play. I think we got better collectively after the bye week with our defense overall. If you take a look at it statistically, both in turnovers and point production, we were actually in the top 10 in point production over the last seven games. So we did improve in that area and guys felt more comfortable in their roles, not only at the safety position, also at the outside linebacker position when Rak [Brian Orakpo] went down. So that’s good experience that we’ve got with guys on our football team. Now you look at the addition of these guys and you let them compete. We’ll find out in time. That’s why we’ve got these OTA days, we’ve got these preseason games to evaluate these guys. I also like some of the guys behind them. I thought [Jordan] Pugh did a heck of a job last year. [Devin] Holland came in. We’ve got Meriweather coming off of a ACL. Hopefully he can come back. But we do have some competition and that’s what you’re looking for. You’re looking for depth, so if you do lose some players, you can still find a way to win. We have that now much more than we’ve had in the past.”

On his expectations for these players retaining information from this camp:

“The majority of the guys, depending on their finals, they come back a week from tomorrow and they get a chance to go through not only one more week of the second phase, but they get ready for OTA days. If someone is here for all the OTA days, they get a good feel for what we’re going to do during the season. Collectively, we’ve got a lot of time for these guys to come in, get in football shape. We get a good feel for what they can do actually before we go to Richmond. That’s what we want to do, get these guys mentally ready so once we do start in Richmond, they don’t have to think, they can react and we can see their athletic ability.”

On the injury statuses of running back Chris Thompson and tight end Jordan Reed:

“Take a look at Thompson. It’s six months since he had the ACL [injury]. He’ll be full-go according to the doctors by the time we open camp. It’ll be right at eight months, which is great. He’s working out now. Doctors say the ACL is looking great. He’s working out right now. You can see him run. I’m very impressed. He’s a guy that we think can help us. He’s got big play capabilities and a guy that we had ranked very high. I believe if he didn’t have that injury, he would have been a first-round, second-round draft choice. That’s how we had him ranked. Hopefully he can get healthy. When you take a look at Reed, he had a little bit of a pull with a quad, a little bit of soreness in the knee because of the quad. We’ll see. We’re going to put him through a little bit of rehab and hopefully he’ll be able to go in a couple of weeks. We just don’t want to push him too hard because it’s a little bit sore right now. He hasn’t done anything in about two-and-a-half, three weeks. But our key is to get him them ready for the season and both guys will be, I think, more than ready.”

On what he looks for in players trying to make the roster:

“Well, the good part about it right now is it’s hard to make our 90-man roster. We’ve got a lot of guys out here. We had 47 guys, I believe, that were free agents and they had to show us what they were made of or what they could do to earn a spot because we’ve got to cut somebody to bring somebody on. We’ve got more depth right now than we have had, so it’s not easy to make our football team. The last couple of years, we’ve had a lot of guys come in. Now it’s a little bit tougher and that’s the type of depth you want.”

On comparing running back Shawn Morris to his brother, Alfred:

“Same personality, for sure. I’m not sure they both run the same. But what a quality young man.”

On Morris and other tryout players getting an opportunity:

“What we do is have our scouts look at these players and if they think somebody has an attribute where it gives them a chance to make our football team, then we bring them in. We brought in, like I mentioned, I believe it was 47 guys and either a scout or a coach saw something that they thought they should be in our camp and have a chance to make our football team.”

On if it was interesting to have offensive lineman Andrew Robiskie, the son of former Redskins coach Terry Robiskie, try out:

“It really is. In fact, when I was with the Raiders, Terry was on the staff and I got a chance to know Terry quite well. In fact, I brought his son into the office today and I talked to him for about 10-15 minutes and shared some stories with him about me and Terry when I first got to the Raider job. We had some fun stories to talk about. But [he is] a class young man. You can see that he handles himself just like Terry. Very smart, just coming off some injuries and he did a heck of a job in our camp.”

On the timeline for players knowing if they made the team:

“I tell them that I can’t tell them for sure. Sometimes a guy will get hurt. Sometimes we’ll lose a player. I just tell them to stay in shape. I tell them to believe in themselves. If they believe in themselves, the opportunity will come sometime, if not from us, from another team. There’s a number of teams next week working a lot of these guys out, so they’ll have some opportunities to go other places and show people what they can do. But there’s a number of players out here today that could be in the National Football League that we won’t be able to sign. I just told them to believe in their dreams and just don’t let people tell you you can’t do something if you believe in yourself.”

On quarterback Ryan Radcliff:

“He did a good job. That’s part of the process of evaluating all these guys. After five practices, what we’ll do this week is look at the tape of these practices and evaluate not only our players that are signed, our free agents and our draft choices in our schemes that we’re doing. But we’ll get a chance to look at some of these young players that we haven’t watched early enough to really make a decision and we’ll do that throughout the week.”

The Washington Capitals won Game 1 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals against the New York Rangers and look to take a 2-0 series lead today in Game 2. Since 2006, teams that have won Game 1 of the first round are 38-18 (.679) in those series. The Capitals enter tonight’s contest with an 18-18 record in Game 2’s. They have gone 11-9 on home ice.

The goal was Ovechkin’s 60th playoff point, moving him into a tie with Mike Ridley for second place in Capitals postseason scoring history. Alex Ovechkin has posted a 1.15 points-per-game average since his first NHL postseason in 2008, tied for the third-highest among all active players (min. 20 games played). His .60 goals per game ranks second in the league in that span. Nicklas Backstrom ranks tied for 11th in Capitals history (Joe Juneau) in playoff scoring with 41 points in 51 games. His 27 assists rank 11th. Mike Green currently ranks fifth among defensemen scoring in Capitals postseason history (30 points), and his seven goals rank seventh.

Braden Holtby stopped 35 of the 36 shots he faced in Game 1 for his eighth career playoff win. Holtby currently ranks fifth in Capitals franchise history in playoff wins. In his 15 career postseason games, Holtby has not lost in back-to-back contests. He owns a 2-0 record with a 1.26 goals-against average and a .958 save percentage in two career Game 2’s (1-0 vs. NYR).

Marcus Johansson and Jason Chimera each scored goals in Game 1 against New York. Chimera’s tally was the eighth playoff goal of his career, with six of those coming against the Rangers. He has recorded 0.17 goals per game and 0.38 points per game during his regular season career vs. 0.22 goals per game and 0.49 points per game in the playoffs.
